Overview

This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the factors driving domestic and international economic and business development, and will provide you with frameworks with which to make strategic decisions. It should enable you to develop an informed perspective on the evolving global economy in which we live and do business. The detailed appreciation you will develop of the major trends and issues in international business will enable you to compete and trade effectively in the international business arena.

At a practical level, this unit should also give you new insights into organisational management, especially in terms of strategic planning and development, and you should be able to participate effectively in decisions relating to international business.

Aims

After studying this unit you should be able to:

  • summarise the key modern economic theories and key events in recent global economic history as they relate to international business
  • identify the major bodies involved in the international business environment
  • summarise the current key international trade and financing practices
  • apply an appropriate market entry strategy for an international business
  • critically evaluate the business, economic and ethical issues that are likely to impact on an international business
  • identify the key leadership, marketing and human resources management issues that arise in an international business context
  • analyse the financial risks of certain common international business strategies
  • explain how all of the above issues apply in China—a major developing international business location
  • anticipate the principal ways in which international business will evolve in the future and allow for this when planning to implement an international business

Unit Chair

Tim Lyons
BBus (Marketing), M.Bus (Banking & Finance)

Tim has worked internationally as a lecturer in postgraduate management programs in France, China, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong. He was Assistant Professor in Marketing at IESEG Business School, (Lille, France) and is now Assistant Professor at ISEG Business School (Paris, France). Tim has also lectured in marketing and international business courses throughout Australia—at Monash University, Latrobe University, RMIT and the Securities Institute of Australia in postgraduate, undergraduate and industry based programs.

Tim has extensive experience as a Senior Marketing Manager in Australia, Japan and the Philippines. He is currently completing his PhD in Marketing at the International School of Management in Paris and is Executive Director of Manage China, which has offices along the eastern seaboard of China. He currently resides in Hangzhou, China.

Stuart Orr
PhD, MEng/Sci, B Eng (Hons)

Prior to his current position as Professor in the Faculty of Business and Law at Deakin University, Stuart was the MBA Director at Deakin University, the Director of several graduate management degrees at Monash University and, before that, operated a management consulting firm. During this time, he worked with many of Australia's largest companies. He has also visited and held positions at a number of other leading universities within and outside Australia, including the universities of Cambridge and Munich.

Stuart's areas of teaching and research are strategic management, organisational behaviour and international management. He also regularly presents executive-level programs to industry. His research projects have been conducted in both the Australian and international contexts and he has published the results of his work widely in magazines, industry reports and refereed journal articles.
